My awesome Teacher Candidate, Kyra, has been teaching my grade 4's about procedure writing. Today she tried an idea that everyone loved! First, she created several little drawings using a variety of shapes and symbols.
Then, she had the children pair off with someone they each work well with. Every person got a different picture. They sat back-to-back and described the steps in order so the partner could recreate the picture without looking. They used sequence words like "first", "then", "next", "finally".
Finally, they completed a reflection on strategies used to help the partner be successful.
I hope you had a great weekend! We had a very sunny one here in Ontario and things have even done a bit of melting. Mind you we have had such a ridiculous amount of snow there is still tons left! I am linking up with my friend Ali at Teaching Powered by Caffeine for her new Lovin' It & Over It link party.
I am feeling a lot of love lately. So there is way more "Lovin' It" than "Over It". Lovin' It
My new Fitbit
My sweet Mom got me a Fitbit for my upcoming fake birthday. It is nearly charged... I can't wait to use it! I love it already! I am very interested in monitoring my horrible sleep cycles.
In progress shower
I'm also loving my two new bathrooms my husband has been renovating. It is so exciting to come home everyday and see what has happened that day!
I am so excited about the upcoming March Break, and in preparation had to get a super fun pedicure! (It was my first in ages!) We tried out a new spot and loved it!
4. Finally, I love the Olympics but am ready for my favourite tv shows to air new episodes again. Over It
1. I am so over this whole winter, cold weather, torrential rain, snow, ice pellets, freezing rain... Bring on Spring!
Don't forget to enter my fake birthday giveaway! I'm going to draw the lucky winner on Saturday, March 1st. That gives you this week to enter.
I am just loving this long weekend! As all of my friends and family know, I only have a birthday every 4 years. Yes, I'm lucky enough to be born on February 29th - every American presidential election and every Summer Olympics happens on my birthday year. I also like to celebrate my birthday many times during the month of February when I do not have a birthday. This year I am going to share the love by offering my first Rafflecopter giveaway ever! (Fingers crossed that it works!) a Rafflecopter giveaway
I am also linking up with Jennifer at Mrs. Laffin's Laughings for a Peek at My Week.
This is a 4 day week for us - Monday is called Family Day here in Ontario - so no school for us. The rest of the week we are working on data management in math. We will be doing some Olympic Math and creating graphs with Olympic data. Don't those hockey games keep you on the edge of your seat? My awesome teacher candidate will be teaching the grade 4's all about procedure writing. I love procedure writing - especially when it incorporates food. (Hint hint!) I'm also going to try Writing Circles - check out Jennifer Laffin's post about these. Wishing you all the best for the rest of your weekend. :)
We had a great Valentine's Day (considering it was a big old full moon)! We did some Valentine's Day problem solving using Music-Mix-Math which you can download free from Laura Candler - here. This was such an engaging activity for my children! I created four Valentine's problems - 2 per side per page. I told the children to walk quickly around the room (with pencil and paper) changing direction often. When the music stopped they partnered up with the person closest to them - who they could work well with. Then they read problem number 1, discussed it, and each wrote a solution on the paper. The music resumed. They walked around again. When the music stopped, they found a new partner, discussed question 1 to see if they had the same answer, and explained the reasoning if they didn't. Then this new pair worked on question 2. The process repeated until the 4 questions were solved and checked. I gave only a few minutes per question. They were 100% on task! Give it a try! Here is a picture of my lovelies hard at work and the music I used today. Happy Valentine's Day!
This past week was one of the best yet! On Wednesday we had a ridiculous snow storm - but luckily buses were not cancelled. So we got to SKYPE with our pen pals from Jennifer Laffin's class.
My students could not be more excited! You should have heard the squeals when they saw that our Wisconsin friends were online. Each pen pal got to meet their pen pal face-to-face! My favourite moment was when my boy B appeared on the screen and he was practically a twin to one of Jennifer's students, K. Incredible!
That was definitely the highlight of our week! Here are a couple of pictures to share with you from that day. Here is a view from our third floor classroom window and my boy showing you that there are more than 21 cm of snow that day so far! We usually have no snow on our third floor windows.
Isn't that ridiculous?!
This week is also going to be great! I have an awesome Teacher Candidate starting tomorrow and staying for the four weeks until March Break. I hope she loves us! For our Collaborative Inquiry, we are working on Accountable Talk. Check out the nice anchor chart my neighbour Miss J made.
We are also continuing with Data Management in Math. We are working on scale. On Tuesday we get to go to the Symphony with all of the grade 4's in our district. It will be so fun! We had to learn a dance to the Can Can and we dance in the theatre while the symphony plays. On Wednesday I am away from school marking application forms from potential teacher candidates at our local university. On Friday... it's Valentine's Day! We also get to have a Groove workshop. Have you heard of this? We did it last year too. So fun. It is a kind of dance where each person moves in his or her own manner. Similar yet different. Well, I hope you have an amazing week too!
1. Do you not agree that we have had the weirdest winter ever? There is a big snow storm warning for my neck of the woods and a good chunk of the Northern United States for today. We seem to have freezing rain/snow every single Saturday. Cra-zy!
2. I never let the weather get me down. My mom and I are going to run, go for breakfast, and have a great day. Here we are running in last week's blizzard.
3. As you can see, I SHOULD be doing report cards... but I LOVE my Saturdays. Report cards can wait until this afternoon and tomorrow. :)
4. Wanting warmer weather. It was actually above zero yesterday (Celsius)! Thankfully we have booked our March Break Florida trip. Now that is some much better weather to look forward to.
5. Needing - nothing. I am content.
2 Truths and a Lie
All my friends know my lie is number 1. I hate melted cheese! I just can't eat it. Ever. I know. That's weird.
We did a math facts Boggle challenge on Friday at the end of the day. It was so fun. The children worked in pairs and had to whisper so other groups couldn't hear them. The winner had the most number of accurate facts. They could add, subtract, multiply, divide or do a mixture of operations.
