A Year of Awesome Linky

I am linking up with Erin of Mrs. Beattie's Classroom for her Year of Awesome linky.
On Monday, we read Enemy Pie and started our Mentor Sentence work.  We also had not only a Bus Safety presentation, but also a Walk, Bike, Ride... to School presentation.  The children were excellent listeners!
On Tuesday, we finished up our portraits and our writing about ourselves in preparation for Open House.  We did Erin's Number Sense Scoot Game.  My students loved it!

The highlight of Wednesday was our Place Value Jeopardy!  They loved that too!!!  We also watched a very short video from 3-2-1 Contact on Light.
I was at school today for twelve hours!  It was our Open House.  The parents were so nice.  We started our day with a fire drill.  That set some students off immediately.
We had a P.A. Day today.  The children got a long weekend.  Our day was very productive!  We got some time in the afternoon to collaborate with our grade team.  It was awesome!

How was your week?  Link up with Erin and share.  :)

Star Struck - War on Fun and a Peek at my Week

Yesterday, Rick Mercer came to town for our local flying club's 3rd annual Flour Bombing Contest.  This is where you go up in a plane, drop a brown paper bag of flour out of the plane, and hope it lands on (or closest to) the target.
Me with my new best friend
Here is one of his funny 'Rick's Rants' about banning fun things at school.  Rick is hilarious!
I am also linking up with Jennifer of Mrs. Laffin's Laughings for a Peek at my Week.
On Monday, we have a bus safety presentation.  We also have the Health Unit coming to talk to my class about the importance of walking, riding a bike, or taking the bus to school.  My grade 3's are learning about Force in science while my grade 4's are learning about Light and Sound.  We are going to put a pencil in a glass of water to see what we see.

In our Read to Someone duotangs, I have added the song "If I had a Million Dollars".  During Read to Someone, they can read a 'just right' book to their partners and/or take a Read to Someone duotang.  I have added a new song each week - but poems will show up too.  (It is super cute to hear them singing softly to their partner!)  So far we have:  Count On Me, Let it Go, and We are Going to be Friends.

In gym, we are learning soccer skills.  We played a game called Statues and Dribblers.  Half of the class stands like a statue with their feet apart.  The other half have soccer balls.  They dribble the balls quickly around the room, shooting them through as many statues' legs as possible.  After a couple of minutes, I call switch.  Statues grab a ball.  Dribblers become statues.

We have also been busy getting ready for this Thursday's Open House.  We are writing paragraphs about us and drawing our self-portraits.  Friday is a P.A. Day!  Have a great week!

Five for Friday - First Week Style

I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for their famous 5 for Friday linky.  I'm not going to lie, I am very very tired.  This was our first week back.  I will do my best to be as coherent as possible.
We launched our Daily 5 with Read to Self.  My students were very keen on this.  Apparently, they LOVE to read!!!  They already have built up to 10 minutes!!
We did some team building activities.  We started with Save Fred.  For some reason, I didn't get any pictures of it.  But I found a great prezi to introduce the activity.  Save Fred
The next team building activity we did was The Marshmallow Challenge.  I used Meg at The Teacher Studio's pack.  All of the activities in this are amazing!  If you don't already have it, I highly recommend it!!
They had so much fun with this!
For this activity, you place three cups (we used red Solo cups) side by side facing down.  On top of each cup, place a cup right side up.  Take an elastic band.  Tie a string to each of the four 'corners' of the elastic band.  Put your students into groups of four.  Each person holds one string.  They must work as a team to lift the top three cups (mine all did it one-by-one), flip them over, and create a pyramid.  They may not touch the elastic or the cups with their hands.  Fun, right?

I just wanted to let you know that this was the hottest week of the Summer.   Welcome back to our third floor, un-airconditioned classroom.  LOL!

Currently September

On this last day of summer vacation, I'm linking up with Farley at Oh Boy 4th Grade for her monthly Currently linky party.

Listening:  I just love TV.  Even if I'm not paying attention, I love to have it on in the background.
Loving:  It's my last day of Summer vacation.  A new batch of friends will be coming through my doors tomorrow morning.  I am all ready and do not need to go to school today.  I'm going to go walk on the beautiful trail with my family.
Wanting:  Who wants to vacuum on the last day of vacation?  Not I!  That fairy never ever shows up...  If you find her, send her my way.
Needing:  We still need a BBQ.  I'm getting really tired of making the same kinds of foods.  I used to have a great break in the summer with bbq favourites, but no such luck this year.
3 Trips:  Italy is on the top of my list.  I have always wanted to go there!  I have flown over Boston when we go to Cape Cod, but we have never actually been there.  One year, we had a trip planned, but my friend got a teaching job that started the next day.  The trip was cancelled.  Some day I will get to these places.  I just know it.

Have a great holiday Monday!!!
